Born and raised in the U.K., Austen received her B.A. from the University of Wolverhampton. She then went on to earn a Post Graduate Teaching Degree at Sussex University.
A lifelong potter, Austen has been creating with clay for over 50 years. Her work is based on classic historical and geometric shapes or forms occurring in nature.
She divides her work into two main areas of inquiry; the functional …fine high fired porcelain and stoneware which is designed for daily use, and the ceremonial….Obvara, Naked and Glazed Raku fired wall and sculptural pieces which are whimsical and infused with a joy in the medium.
Over the years, Austen has explored many forming and firing techniques, finding that lessons learned in one discipline can inform work in another.
