Kay Austen

Kay Austen is a contemporary West Coast Canadian ceramist. She has been passionate about creating with clay for over 50 years.

Austen divides her work into two areas of inquiry; the functional, designed for daily use and the ceremonial, meant for decorative or semi-functional use. Her work is based on classic geometric shapes or forms occurring in nature. “Clay is inherently heavy, static, stable. I aim for lightness, rhythm, dynamic movement… I want my pieces to give a feeling of growth and vitality. My aim is that each piece will elicit an emotional response from you, the user and owner”.
