Maciek Walentowicz has had a long and diverse career in the arts. After leaving Poland where he worked on set design in the film industry he became involved in London’s contemporary art scene. From there he moved between Montreal, Toronto and New York where he helped to develop the Centre for Contemporary Art, an organization dedicated to connecting artists, galleries and educational institutions. During this time he also worked as a jeweller and combining all of these interests he established the renowned Jewellery Art & Design program at Vancouver Community College where he taught art history, design and jewellery techniques for many years. His current body of work focuses on sculptural constructions that include various materials and colourful finishes. The figure has long been a central theme in his art and in combination with architectural forms and found objects the results are quirky, mysterious and theatrical.
