Toby Jaxon

West coast adventure artist Toby Jaxon affirms,”Nature is alive with vibrating colour and animating spirit; this observation is confirmed in the views I enjoy from my own backyard and informs many of my canvasses.” Easily accessible ocean, lakes and high mountain trails provide an abundance of stunning views and for this passionate artist, it translates into new artful compositions derived from the vastness and mystery of nature…where the unconscious speaks in ways beyond words! Toby’s artistic acrylic creations feature vivid contrasting colour and multiple perspective. The under-painting sporadically pops through to persuade unification of the entire piece. Toby develops a relationship of naïve colour shapes using a variety of deliberate strokes, a technique that creates a dynamic rendition, a shock effect that confronts the viewer’s experience. Her current sky-high cloud series, painted in oils, represents a 30 day ‘daily practice’ challenge to let go loosen up…up, up and away into the CLOUDS!

Toby was recently honoured to be the first Artist in Residence at Cordelia’s Locket and, back in June of 2019, was a resident guest on the Azamara Quest Club Cruises living and painting aboard the ship, for a month, as it travelled up and down the Alaskan coastline.

After travelling the globe in her youth, visiting over 30 countries, countless galleries, temples, monuments and landmarks, Toby has enjoyed extensive cultural exposure. She is a passionate Volunteer for the Arts as past president and director of VISUALS, the Squamish Valley Artists Society; arts coordinator for the Squamish Windfest; an active member of the North Shore Artists’ Guild and the Whistler Arts Council; founding director Vice Chair of the Squamish Arts Council, board member of the DOS Public Art Committee and juried member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

Toby also showcases her art in public venues, art shows, solo & group exhibitions, private and corporate collections and participates in performance art, demos, and teaches art classes, workshops and ‘Pinot & Paint’ nights (pre-pandemic!) where she taught live step-by-step instructions to as many as 100 participants. She is the Foyer Gallery Curator supporting monthly juried art installations and exhibitions in the Squamish Public Library. She contributes media articles and web-based newsfeeds, as well as organizes and hosts fundraisers for non-profits and is the recipient of the Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award for Arts & Culture.
